Microneedling

Controlled microchannel therapy

Creates controlled microchannels in the skin at a planned depth — a category of device-dependent techniques, not one standardized treatment with one universal use.

What it is

Medical microneedling creates controlled microchannels in the skin and may be used for selected scar, wrinkle and texture concerns, depending on the specific device and indication. It is not simply "making holes so products go deeper" — the FDA has noted that authorized microneedling devices carry limited cleared indications, and has not cleared microneedling devices for delivering cosmetics, topical medications, vitamin solutions, drugs or blood products into the skin.

How it works

Treatment depth, the specific device used, the indication, skin condition and infection control all factor into whether microneedling is appropriate for a given concern. The underlying principle — controlled micro-injury prompting a tissue response — is consistent across devices, but the details that matter clinically are not interchangeable between them.

Equipment detail during a treatment

Why the device and depth matter

Not all microneedling is the same procedure.

Which device, at what depth, for which indication — those decisions follow from what's actually being treated, not from microneedling being available as a category. Active infection, certain inflammatory conditions and pigment-risk considerations can all change whether it's appropriate at all.

How Dr. Lancho thinks about it

Microneedling is not simply "making holes so products go deeper." Treatment depth, device, indication, skin condition and infection control all matter, and this distinction is treated carefully rather than marketed as a universal delivery method.

When another approach may make more sense

Active infection, certain inflammatory skin conditions, pigment-risk considerations and other patient factors may alter candidacy. Laser, RF microneedling, chemical peels or another treatment may address a given concern differently.

Before your consultation

Bring the concern, not a device preference.

Assessment determines whether this category of treatment — and which specific device and depth — is the appropriate match for what's actually there.
